Ride the Mighty Volcanoes of Japan, Mt. Fuji & Mt. Ontake – Ep22

Pedro Mota 16:42 August 2020

EDITORIAL SUMMARY

This episode follows a southbound motorcycle journey across Honshu, with visits to Mount Fuji and Mount Ontake. Narrow roads, forest riding and the changing view above the clouds shape a travel film that also pauses at the edge of a recently active volcano.

About this film

Episode 22 in Pedro Mota’s Japan travel series is a short motorcycle documentary assembled from footage recorded in 2014. Its route brings together volcanoes, mountain roads and forest landscapes, with the rider reflecting on how the forests encountered on day and night rides connect with Japanese culture. The film also describes this part of Honshu as a seismic centre where three tectonic plates meet, setting the journey’s scenery against the region’s geological character.

The journey

After experiencing Yoshi’s hospitality, the ride continues south, first toward Mount Fuji and then past Mount Ontake. Police prevent a closer approach to Ontake, which had erupted recently, and clouds obscure the volcanic smokestack. The route passes dams and follows narrow roads that at times feel almost deserted, offering a quieter contrast to the dense urban areas in the valleys. At Fuji, low clouds create a striking layered view: from above, they resemble a waterfall spilling over the edge of a cloud bank. Forest riding, by day and night, rounds out this stretch of the journey.
