FILM
Japan, Crossing Russian Sea Border into Hokkaido. Motorbike Around the World – Ep18
EDITORIAL SUMMARY
This episode follows a motorcycle journey from Russia to Japan, beginning with the ferry crossing from Sakhalin to Hokkaido. The arrival marks a shift from completing a long-distance riding mission to exploring Japan by motorcycle.
About this film
Episode 18 in Pedro Mota’s ongoing motorcycle-travel series, the film draws on footage recorded in 2014. Mota’s wider journey began in the Netherlands on a Honda Transalp and travelled east toward Vladivostok, with detours through the Middle East, Central Asia and Mongolia. In Japan, the focus turns to touring: Hokkaido is presented as a popular destination for Japanese motorcyclists making a major trip, with a distinctive culture of greeting fellow riders, including scooter riders.
The journey
The crossing from Sakhalin brings the journey out of Russia and onto Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s four main islands. After arriving, Mota describes feeling briefly uncertain about what comes after his main riding objective, then begins to settle into touring on Japan’s twisty roads. The route continues through Sapporo to Hakodate, where he takes another ferry, this time to Honshu, Japan’s main island. The episode’s account links the sea crossings with the change in pace from reaching a destination to riding onward through Japan.
What to expect
- A motorcycle ferry crossing from Sakhalin to Hokkaido
