SKÅNE / ÖSTERLEN: A roadtrip in Sweden’s south to Ales Stenar, Sandhammaren, Ystad, Kivik & Skanör
EDITORIAL SUMMARY
A motorcycle road trip through Skåne and Österlen, Sweden’s southernmost province, links coastal stops, small towns and historic sites. The film follows a route from Åhus towards Kivik and on to Sandhammaren, Ales Stenar, Ystad and Skanör.
About this film
Journalist and author Lea Rieck presents this ride as an exploration of southern Sweden, a region she describes through its beaches, rolling hills, villages and history. It forms part of her motorcycle journey from Switzerland to Nordkapp, a 12,000-kilometre expedition with a travel partner across six countries. Rieck rides a BMW 1200 GSA. The film’s focus here is local travel: a sequence of places and roads in Skåne and Österlen rather than a broader account of the whole expedition.
The journey
The itinerary starts in Åhus, continues over the hills of Brösarp and reaches Kivik, known in the description as Sweden’s apple kingdom. A detour on countryside roads between fields and rolling hills leads to Glimmingehus, described as the country’s best-preserved stronghold. The ride then takes in the white sands of Sandhammaren Beach and Ales Stenar, a stone circle overlooking the Baltic Sea, before visits to Ystad and the coastal village of Skanör. The route combines inland roads with stops by the sea, including time at Skanör’s beach.
