GEIRANGER: Over Gaularfjellet’s hairpins to Norway’s most famous Fjord // EPS. 4 EXPEDITION NORTH

Got2Go 9:44 November 2020

EDITORIAL SUMMARY

This episode of Expedition North follows a motorcycle ride from Balestrand toward Geiranger, across a landscape of fjords, mountain roads and changing conditions. The route’s first major hairpin climb leads to Gaularfjellet’s Utsikten viewpoint, before the journey continues toward Norway’s best-known fjord.

About this film

Part of Lea’s motorcycle overlanding journey from Switzerland to Nordkapp, this episode covers a stage in Norway with her travel partner. The wider expedition is described as a 12,000-kilometre journey through six countries, from July to September 2020. Here, the focus is on the ride north from Balestrand and the landscapes encountered on the way to Geirangerfjord. The film brings together the road, the route’s fjord scenery and the challenge of riding through rain and cold.

The journey

Leaving Balestrand, the riders pass Esefjord and Vetlefjord before climbing Gaularfjellet on a hairpin road to around 800 metres above sea level. They stop at Utsikten, then follow Gaularvassdraget and reach Innvikfjorden as the route continues over snowy mountains. Rain arrives as they near Geiranger, setting the final approach against the episode’s unsettled riding conditions. The destination is Geirangerfjord, the fjord the description identifies as Norway’s most famous.

What to expect

  • A motorcycle approach to Geiranger from Balestrand.
  • Fjord views at Esefjord, Vetlefjord and Innvikfjorden.
  • Gaularfjellet’s hairpins, Utsikten viewpoint and a rain-soaked final stretch.
