SIERRA LEONE: Black market money! From golden beaches on the Freetown Penninsula to Bo // EPS 10

Got2Go 9:24 August 2020

EDITORIAL SUMMARY

A motorcycle journey through Sierra Leone moves from the beaches of the Freetown Peninsula inland to Bo. Along the way, the search for a favourite beach gives way to practical challenges with changing money and buying food.

About this film

This episode is part of Lea’s motorcycle journey along the West African coast, the first stage of a trip around Africa. In Sierra Leone, the film turns its attention to the country’s coastline and everyday travel, rather than the negative headlines often associated with the country. The journey is made on a Yamaha Ténéré 700. The episode belongs to the WEST AFRICA series and runs for just over nine minutes.

The journey

After crossing from Guinea into Sierra Leone, Lea sets out to find the country’s most beautiful beach. The search takes place on the Freetown Peninsula, where the description names River Number 2 Beach and Bureh Beach. Bureh becomes the preferred choice, and Lea stays there for a while, with the beach presented as a relaxed alternative to commercialised tourism. From the coast, the route heads inland to Bo. There, exchanging money and buying food and vegetables become part of the experience of travelling by motorcycle.

What to expect

  • A coastal section of a longer West African motorcycle journey
  • Beaches on the Freetown Peninsula, including Bureh Beach
  • The move inland to Bo and the practicalities of travel
