[S1 – Eps. 66] GATEWAY TO HELL in Turkmenistan
EDITORIAL SUMMARY
A desert ride across Turkmenistan leads to Darvasa and the Darvasa Gas Crater, known as the Gateway to Hell. The journey continues over a sandy track to the crater, followed by a night camping in the desert.
About this film
Part of Itchy Boots’ Season 1 journey, “India to Europe,” this episode centres on a visit to one of Turkmenistan’s striking destinations. After hours of riding through the desert, the rider reaches Darvasa, then sets out for the crater. The account pairs the practical challenge of reaching the site by motorcycle with time spent at the destination, including an overnight stay in a rented tent.
The journey
From Darvasa, the route to the Darvasa Gas Crater covers seven kilometres along a sandy track through sand dunes. To reduce the risk of getting stuck while travelling alone, the rider pays two local people to guide the way and help push the motorcycle if needed. That assistance proves unnecessary. The crater is described as a fascinating place and a worthwhile detour, and the visit ends with a night in the desert in a rented tent.
What to expect
- A long desert ride through Turkmenistan
- A sandy, dune-crossing approach to the crater
- An overnight stay in a rented desert tent
