FILM

Crossing Sinai Peninsula Solo on a Motorcycle. Difficult Egyptian Border Crossing. EP 45

onherbike 19:53 November 2019

EDITORIAL SUMMARY

A solo motorcycle journey through Egypt becomes a test of whether the Sinai Peninsula can be crossed on the way to mainland Africa. Police escort, time on the coast and a visit with family shape this episode of an ongoing round-the-world ride.

About this film

Episode 45 of onherbike’s Africa, Round The World series follows the rider in Egypt, the 34th country of her round-the-world tour. She set out from Australia in April 2017 on a solo journey aboard a BMW F800GS, with no fixed final destination or duration. Here, the focus is a challenging part of that larger motorcycle expedition: getting across Sinai and onward to mainland Africa.

The journey

Before setting out across the peninsula, the rider had heard conflicting views about whether the crossing was possible. She chose to attempt it and succeeded. Police escorted her for most of the way, continuing until she had passed the Suez Canal. The crossing is not the episode’s only pause in the journey: she also spends time on the coast and with her mother. Together, these details place the ride within a broader account of travel through Egypt, balancing the demands of the route with time away from the road.

What to expect

  • A solo motorcycle crossing of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.
  • A route toward mainland Africa, with police escort for much of the way.
  • Coastal downtime and time spent with the rider’s mother.
