EL CUYO: most BEAUTIFUL beachtown in Mexico & an offroad trip to RIO LAGARTOS & LAS COLORADAS

Got2Go 13:00 July 2021

EDITORIAL SUMMARY

This short getaway follows a coastal road trip to El Cuyo, a small fishing village on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. From its broad beaches, the journey continues to the Ría Lagartos nature reserve and the pink waters of Las Coloradas.

About this film

Lea Rieck returns to El Cuyo, a place she first visited in 2017, for a look at the village and its surroundings. The film presents El Cuyo as a quieter alternative to the Riviera Maya, with white beaches and a lively kitesurf scene. Rieck’s visit took place between March and June 2021. This 13-minute instalment of the SHORT GETAWAYS series pairs a destination portrait with an off-road excursion along the coast.

The journey

The itinerary begins with a stroll through El Cuyo and time on its beach, where colorful kites can be seen over the water. From there, the road trip heads to the remote Ría Lagartos nature reserve, including a visit to the flamingo nesting colony described as the world’s largest. The route also takes in Las Coloradas and Laguna Rosa, before a walk beside the lagoon at the fishing town of Río Lagartos. Back in El Cuyo, local restaurants and a food truck round out the stops.

What to expect

  • A portrait of El Cuyo’s village life and open beach
  • Kitesurfing and a coastal off-road road trip
  • Ría Lagartos, flamingos and the pink waters of Las Coloradas
