About this film
Part of the USA CROSS-COUNTRY series, this 17-minute film presents a motorcycle journey made in May and June 2021. Its focus is the route to Key West and the character of the Keys, from the linked islands and bridges to the town’s tropical atmosphere. Alongside the ride, the itinerary includes suggestions for places to eat and sights to visit, including a Cuban breakfast and Ernest Hemingway’s former home, now a museum.
The journey
The route follows US Route 1 south for about 125 miles from the Miami area to Key West, crossing the Upper, Middle and Lower Keys on the Overseas Highway. Islamorada features as a suggested place to stay, with Casamar Market noted for stone crab claws and Robbie’s for breakfast. The Seven Mile Bridge is a standout stretch, spanning about 11 kilometres between Knight Key and Little Duck Key. In Key West, the journey reaches the southernmost point of continental USA.
