Garden Route & Route 62 – Back Country Roads – PART 2 BAVIAANSKLOOF to CAPE TOWN
EDITORIAL SUMMARY
This second part of a two-part motorcycle travel documentary follows Craig Marshall and Kirsten Fugard from Baviaanskloof to Cape Town. Its itinerary brings together back-country roads, named passes and stops featured in the Garden Route and Route 62 book.
About this film
Filmed, edited and presented by Marshall and Fugard for MSA Travel, the 33-minute episode introduces places along South Africa’s Garden Route and Route 62. The journey is part of a project highlighting locations covered by the first book in the Back Country Southern Africa route series. The film’s chapter index also points to short features beyond the ride itself, including river crossings, a gorge hike and overnight stops.
The journey
The route begins in Baviaanskloof, with stops at the reserve, Ripple Hill Hotel in Patensie, Speekhout Tree House and Makkedaat Caves. From there, the itinerary includes The Willow Historical Guesthouse, Prince Albert and the Swartberg Pass, followed by Gamkaskloof (Die Hel) and the ride from Swartberg Pass to Rooiberg Pass. Further stops named in the film include Seweweekspoort on Route 62, Barrydale, Tradouw Pass, Montagu and Matjiesfontein. The final stretch is identified by Old Du Toitskloof Pass and Cape Town. Along the way, the index lists river crossings, a hike through Waterkloof Gorge and several guesthouses and restaurants.
