GEORGIA COAST: the BEST road trip to ST. SIMONS ISLAND, DARIEN & ST. MARYS

Got2Go 15:52 November 2021

EDITORIAL SUMMARY

A motorcycle ride along Georgia’s coast brings together historic Darien, the seaside community of St. Simons Island and St. Marys near the Florida border. The film is a coastal chapter of Got2Go’s cross-country journey across the United States.

About this film

Riding a Yamaha Ténéré 700, Lea Rieck travels through the United States on a 28-day, 13-state journey from Los Angeles to Miami. This episode turns from the highway toward coastal Georgia, with stops chosen for their history, coastal scenery and character. The trip took place in May and June 2021, and the film balances the experience of riding toward the coast with visits to towns and landmarks along the way.

The journey

Darien offers marshland views and a visit to Fort King George Historic Site, where the present fort is a reconstruction of the British wooden fort built in the 18th century. At St. Simons Island, the coastal setting meets small-town life; the pier is a gathering place for fishermen. The ride continues to St. Marys, which describes itself as the Gateway to the Georgia Coast. Its ferry terminal serves Cumberland Island, but the rider arrives too late to catch the boat. The island’s national seashore, beaches and wild horses remain a reason to consider a return visit. The film also includes an overnight at the historic Spencer House Inn, built in 1872.
