About this film
Episode 9 is part of Lea and her travel partner’s overland journey from Switzerland to Nordkapp, a 12,000-kilometre trip through six countries. On Senja, the film shifts between motorcycle travel along the island’s scenic route and time on foot in the mountains. The island’s contrasting character is part of the story: green and welcoming on its landward side, more exposed and rugged toward the ocean.
The journey
The travellers arrive by ferry at Gryllefjord and stay near Hamn I Senja, using the area as a base to explore. Their ride takes them past rough mountains, through dark tunnels and across birch woodlands. From the village of Fjordgard, they set out on the trail to the summit of Hesten, with a view across to Segla, whose profile is likened to a sail. The hike brings an unwelcome complication: bites from flies cause one ankle and foot to swell. Later, staying awake through the night allows Lea to experience Senja’s midnight sun.
What to expect
- A motorcycle ride through Senja’s varied scenery
- A hike from Fjordgard to Hesten and a view of Segla
- The midnight sun and a trail-side encounter with biting flies
