On 26th April 1986 the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Northern Ukraine (former Soviet Union) became the scene of the worst manmade disaster in the history of mankind. An explosion at the plant was the result of a poorly designed experiment on reactor unit 4 conducted by inadequately trained personnel. The accident and the fire that followed released massive amounts of radioactive material into the clouds above Ukraine, that later fell as rain across Europe and as far away as Norway, Wales and Ireland.
