WESTERN SAHARA to MAURITANIA: from Dakhla to the most dangerous border of the world
EDITORIAL SUMMARY
This WEST AFRICA episode follows a motorcycle journey south from Dakhla through the desert landscapes of Morocco and Western Sahara, toward Mauritania. A practical stop and a short break in Dakhla come before the ride continues along Africa’s west coast.
About this film
Lea’s film is part of an ongoing motorcycle journey through West Africa, following the coast across a planned 12-country trip. The 14-minute episode picks up three months after the motorcycles were first taken to Dakhla. Before setting off again, the riders look for a motorcycle garage to change their tyres, then take time to enjoy the Dakhla oasis and go kitesurfing. These preparations set the scene for the desert ride ahead.
The journey
From Dakhla, the route heads south through Morocco and Western Sahara along the desert coast. The ride passes multiple checkpoints, dunes and varied landscapes before reaching the Mauritanian border. Stories the travellers had heard about the border—including warnings of a lawless no-man’s-land, landmines and sandy tracks—hang over the approach. The episode brings the journey to the border, making the transition from the Dakhla interlude to the next stage of the ride its central thread.
